Air Curtain for Industrial Use: Benefits, Specifications & Buying Guide

Learn why motor materials, F-class insulation, three-phase power and 25 m/s air speed determine whether an industrial air curtain can truly perform well at warehouse, factory and cold storage doors.

Air Curtain for Industrial Use: Benefits, Specifications & Buying Guide

Many factory and warehouse managers face the same problem: forklifts move in and out all day, and the main door can hardly stay closed. When the door is open, outdoor heat or cold air enters directly. When the door is closed, traffic efficiency drops sharply. PVC strip curtains may block part of the airflow at first, but after a few months they are often damaged by forklifts, covered with oil and dust, or simply pushed aside by workers.

This is not an isolated problem. It is a common energy and management challenge at large industrial doorways.

The role of an industrial air curtain is to form an invisible high-speed airflow barrier at the doorway. It allows forklifts and people to pass freely while separating indoor and outdoor air. It sounds simple, but choosing the wrong equipment means wasted money. If the airflow is not strong enough, the barrier can collapse as soon as a forklift passes through.

The real question is not whether there is air coming out of the unit. The real question is: at a 6-meter, 8-meter or even higher industrial doorway, can the airflow travel from the top to the floor while still maintaining enough speed?

This guide explains which technical details determine whether an industrial air curtain can truly perform well, and what HUANGXI does in motor design and airflow performance.

Industrial Air Curtain vs. Commercial Air Curtain: They Are Not the Same Product

There are many commercial air curtains on the market. Most use single-phase motors and air speeds around 8-12 m/s. They can work well for convenience stores, restaurants and small entrances. But when installed above a warehouse door, they are usually not enough.

Industrial applications face three major challenges:

Larger door openings. Warehouse doors are often 6-8 meters high and 4-6 meters wide, or even wider. The airflow must maintain speed over a much longer distance before it can form an effective barrier near the floor.

Stronger disturbance. Forklifts, loading operations and outdoor crosswinds continuously disturb the airflow barrier. If the air speed is not high enough, the barrier can be broken at any time.

Longer operating time. Logistics warehouses may operate 16-24 hours per day. The motor works under continuous high load, which means winding material and insulation grade become much more important.

That is why a heavy-duty industrial air curtain needs higher air speed, a three-phase motor, centrifugal airflow structure and manufacturing quality that can remain stable under demanding conditions. For a deeper product overview, you can also see HUANGXI’s industrial air curtain page.

HUANGXI Industrial Air Curtain: Motor Materials and Technical Specifications

Copper Winding: A Better Choice Than Aluminum Wire

HUANGXI industrial centrifugal three-phase air curtains use copper winding. Some low-cost competitors may use aluminum wire instead of copper wire to reduce cost, but the difference in heat generation and service life becomes more obvious during long-term operation.

Copper has about 60% higher electrical conductivity than aluminum. With the same cross-sectional area, copper winding produces less heat and lower resistance loss. In industrial environments where the unit runs continuously for long periods, this helps extend motor service life.

F-Class Insulation: 20-35 Degrees Celsius More Thermal Margin

The HUANGXI motor specification uses F-class insulation, rated for 155 degrees Celsius. This is higher than the E-class insulation rated for 120 degrees Celsius or B-class insulation rated for 130 degrees Celsius often used in many commercial air curtains.

What does this 20-35 degrees Celsius difference mean in industrial applications?

During long continuous operation, heat gradually builds up inside the motor. F-class insulation provides a larger thermal margin, making the motor less likely to suffer insulation damage or winding short circuit caused by overheating.

In simple terms: under the same operating conditions, a motor with F-class insulation can achieve longer service life and lower maintenance frequency.

Three-Phase Asynchronous Motor: The Right Choice for Continuous Industrial Operation

The HUANGXI industrial series uses a three-phase asynchronous motor with 380V, 50Hz rated voltage and 2000 r/min rated speed.

Compared with single-phase motors, three-phase motors provide smoother power output, higher starting torque and more stable operation under load.

For an industrial air curtain that needs to maintain high-speed airflow for long periods, a three-phase motor is the correct technical choice.

HUANGXI provides two motor configurations:

  • 500W double-shaft motor (Y70-500-2): suitable for wider door openings or applications that require higher air volume. The double-shaft design can drive airflow more evenly across the full unit length.
  • 240W single-shaft motor (Y70-240-2): suitable for smaller door openings or modular combination configurations.
Industrial air curtain motor configurations and features

HUANGXI industrial air curtains use 380V three-phase asynchronous motors with 500W double-shaft and 240W single-shaft configurations, delivering stable 25 m/s airflow for continuous industrial operation.

25 m/s Air Speed: Why This Number Matters

The HUANGXI industrial series reaches a maximum air speed of 25 m/s. This is a key parameter for forming an effective airflow barrier at large industrial doorways.

For standard industrial doors with a height of 6-8 meters, 25 m/s air speed helps ensure that the airflow still has enough kinetic energy when it reaches the floor, instead of losing effectiveness because of distance decay.

Vibration and Noise Control: Indicators of Stable Operation

HUANGXI technical specifications require:

  • No-load noise below 50 dB
  • Effective motor vibration speed not exceeding 2.8 mm/s
  • Motor shaft runout not exceeding 0.05 mm in assembled condition

These data show that HUANGXI industrial air curtains do not only pursue large air volume. They also focus on stable mechanical operation. Low vibration means less bearing stress and smoother operation, which can help reduce maintenance needs in the long run.

Electrical Safety Indicators

  • Insulation resistance not lower than 50 MOhm
  • Withstand 1800V, 50Hz basic sinusoidal voltage for one second without breakdown
  • Leakage current controlled under specified test conditions

For equipment installed above warehouse doors, where later maintenance is not always convenient, these electrical safety indicators should not be ignored during selection.

Application Scenarios: Where Industrial-Grade Air Curtains Are Truly Needed

High-Traffic Warehouses and Logistics Centers

Loading docks may open and close hundreds of times per day, with forklifts moving in and out continuously. Ordinary air curtains cannot handle this level of operating frequency. High-traffic entrances require durable motors and high enough air speed to ensure that the airflow barrier can quickly recover after every forklift passes through.

Key selection factors: door height, door width, average daily traffic frequency and whether the doorway faces outdoor wind pressure.

Manufacturing Plants With Temperature Control Requirements

Automotive parts factories, electronics assembly areas and food processing lines often have requirements for temperature and cleanliness. However, frequent forklift traffic makes physical curtains difficult to use. Industrial air curtains can create a soft separation between different temperature zones without affecting visibility or traffic.

Compared with PVC strip curtains: air curtains will not be damaged by forklifts, do not need regular replacement, and will not accumulate oil, dust and dirt. The entrance area stays cleaner and safer.

Cold Storage and Freezer Entrances

Cold storage entrances are among the most technically demanding applications for industrial air curtains. The indoor-outdoor temperature difference may exceed 30-40 degrees Celsius. Once warm humid air enters, fog, frost and ice can form near the doorway, creating slip risks and significantly increasing defrost load.

For extreme temperature difference applications, HUANGXI can also provide customized configuration suggestions for cold storage entrances. You can learn more from the cold storage air curtain product page.

Food Processing and Hygiene-Controlled Areas

The entrance of a food plant is not only a traffic point. It is also a point where insects, dust and outdoor air can enter. A stainless steel body is easier to clean, more corrosion-resistant and more suitable for applications near washdown areas.

HUANGXI can provide stainless steel air curtain options to meet hygiene requirements in food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries.

Six Questions to Confirm Before Selection

Before choosing a model, we recommend answering the following questions:

  1. What is the door height? The higher the door, the higher the requirements for air speed and air volume.
  2. What is the door width? The air curtain must cover the full opening, and multiple units may be needed.
  3. How many times does traffic pass through each day? High-frequency sites need industrial-grade motors and durable structures.
  4. How large is the indoor-outdoor temperature difference? Cold storage or heated areas require stronger separation.
  5. Does the doorway face outdoors or crosswind? External wind pressure may require higher air speed or side protection.
  6. Are there dust, oil mist or corrosive gases in the environment? Special environments may require stainless steel or customized materials.

FAQ

How much does F-class insulation affect service life?

F-class insulation rated for 155 degrees Celsius provides 35 degrees Celsius more thermal margin than E-class insulation rated for 120 degrees Celsius. A common industrial rule is that for every 10 degrees Celsius reduction in insulation working temperature, service life can approximately double. F-class insulation gives the motor a larger safety margin in real working conditions, especially in high-temperature environments or long-term full-load operation.

Is 25 m/s air speed enough for all industrial doorways?

For standard industrial doors around 3-5 meters high, 25 m/s is generally enough to ensure that the airflow still has effective speed when it reaches the floor. For extra-high doorways above 6 meters, we recommend contacting HUANGXI for a dedicated selection evaluation. Multiple units or special configurations may be required.

Can HUANGXI provide OEM/ODM customization?

Yes. Customization options include unit length, casing material such as stainless steel, color, voltage configuration and project-specific installation structure. This is suitable for distributors and engineering contractors with bulk purchasing or special project requirements.
